Significance

Chen and co-workers used an electrochemical manganese-based catalytic system to transform functionalized styrene derivatives into their corresponding oxychlorinated products in good to excellent yield. Furthermore, this reaction was performed on a gram scale to demonstrate the scalability.

Comment

The authors performed several preliminary experiments where they discovered that the cell potential was the key parameter. Replacing the anode and cathode with a platinum plate and changing the electrolyte caused considerable decrease in yields.
