Significance

Carbon@Fe3O4-supported cubical Pd nanoparticles (Pd cNPs/C@Fe3O4) promoted the Stille coupling reaction of aryl halides with tributyl(phenyl)stannane to give the corresponding biaryls in up to >99% yield (eq. 1; 20 examples). Pd cNPs/C@Fe3O4 also catalyzed the Mizoroki–Heck reaction of aryl halides with styrene to afford the corresponding trans-stilbenes in up to >99% yield (eq. 2; 15 examples).

Comment

The authors have previously reported the preparation of the Pd cNPs/C@Fe3O4 catalyst and its application to the cyanation of aryl halides (ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces 2015, 7, 22907). In the reaction of iodobenzene with styrene, the catalyst was magnetically recovered and reused five times with a slight loss of its catalytic activity (fresh: 99%; fifth reuse: 85%).
