Significance

Platinum nanoparticles supported on TiO2 (PtNPs@TiO2) promoted the deiodination of aryl iodides under photo irradiation to give the corresponding deiodinated products in up to 87% yield (eq. 1). The cyclization of iodo compounds and bisenones was carried out in the presence of PtNPs@TiO2 under similar conditions to afford the corresponding cyclized products (eqs. 2 and 3).

Comment

In the deiodination of ethyl 4-iodobenzoate, the catalyst was recovered by centrifugation and reused with loss of its catalytic activity (1st reuse: 54% yield, 3rd reuse: trace).
