Significance

The reduction of nitrobenzenes with CO/H2O was catalyzed by a [Rh5(CO)15] cluster encapsulated in a poly(propylene imine) dendrimer [PPI-G3-C16-Rh5(CO)15], which was generated in situ from Rh6(CO)16 and PPI-G3-C16 to afford the corresponding anilines (11 examples, 98–99% yield).

Comment

The formation of PPI-G3-C16-Rh5(CO)15 was confirmed by IR, ESI-MS, 13C NMR spectroscopy, and DLS measurements. Carbonyl, nitrile, and vinyl groups remain intact under the reaction conditions.
