Key words
iron oxide nanoparticles - oxidized graphite support - alkylation

Significance
Oxidized graphite supported iron oxide nanoparticles (GIONPs) catalyzed the alkylation of arenes under reflux conditions to afford the corresponding products in up to 98% yield (21 examples). In the reaction of p-xylene and 2-chlorobutane, the catalyst was recovered by filtration and reused four times (4th reuse: 40% yield).
Comment
GIONPs were characterized by TEM, XRD, and elemental analysis. The catalytic activity of GIONP was superior to that of unsupported iron oxide nanoparticles. Oxidized graphite and commercial graphite do not catalyze this reaction.
