Key words
teranthenes - biradicals - polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Significance
The authors describe the synthesis, X-ray crystal structure, and physical property characteristics of teranthene 1. The stabilized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) was shown to possess prominent biradical character in the ground state.
Comment
The experimental observation of singlet biradical character in a relatively small PAH suggests that further stabilized analogues of these molecules could be useful for the development of ‘graphene-like’ spin transport electronic materials.
