Key words
fluorescence switch - cryptand ligands - photoinduced electron transfer

Significance
Translocation of copper within a cryptand ligand via oxidation/reduction reactions provides a new family of ON-OFF fluorescent systems.
Comment
Upon addition of Cu(II) to the thio-aza cryptands presented, the photoinduced electron transfer from the HOMO of the donor N-atom to the anthracene fluorophore is hindered, owing to complexation of the hard Cu(II) to the N4 part of the molecule. After reduction to Cu(I), the softer cation moves coordination sites, not hindering exciplex formation anymore, and the fluorescence of the monomeric anthracene decreases.
