Significance
A tris(bipyridine)Ru(ll) complex bearing a C16 alkyl chain, Ru16C, catalyzed the hydroxytrifluoromethylation of styrenes 2 with Umemoto’s reagent 1 in water (5 mM for Ru16C) under photoirradiation using an LED (427 nm) to give 3,3,3-trifluoro-1-phenylpropan-1-ols 3a–i in high yields.

Comment
Under the catalytic conditions, micelles of Ru16C were generated in situ [critical micelle concentration (CMC) = 0.38 mM], the hydrophobic cores of which behaved as nano-vessels to promote the photocatalytic reactions.
