Significance
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons incorporating B/N atoms attract much attention because of their modified electronic and supramolecular properties. A set of terrylene diimides (TDI) with B/N embedded at different positions are synthesized.

Comment
The incorporation of B/N atoms is shown to bestow induced dipole moment, lowered aromaticity and near-infrared fluorescence, as well as better electron-transporting semiconducting performance.
