Keywords
dehydrogenative annulation - cobalt catalysis - amino alcohols - secondary alcohols - quinolines - pyridines
Significance
Cobalt catalyst Co-Si/CN was prepared via zeolitic imidazolate frameworks according to equation 1. Co-Si/CN promoted the acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of 2-aminobenzyl alcohols with secondary alcohols in the presence of K3PO4 in toluene at 140 °C for 24 hours to give the corresponding quinolines (40 examples) in up to 94 % yield (eq 2).

Comment
Co-Si/CN also catalyzed the dehydrogenative coupling of 3-aminopropanol with 1-arylethanols in the presence of t-BuOK in toluene at 150 °C for 24 hours to afford 2-arylpyridines (4 examples) in up to 87 % yield (eq 3). In situ generation of 2-aminobenzaldehyde and acetophenone was observed by 1H NMR under the catalytic conditions.
